The first movie trailer of Predators has shown up online. Well, it’s actually a sneak preview in which Producer Robert Rodriguez introduces us to his film, this footage was shown earlier at the SXSW film festival:

Plot:
“A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey.
With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.”
The movie Predators is directed by Nimrod Antal and produced by Robert Rodriguez. The film is starring Adrien Brody, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali. It will be released on July 9, 2010.

Predators First Look

The first pictures of Robert Rodriguez’ Predators, the upcoming sci-fi action movie directed by Nimrod, have surfaced online (thanks to AVP Galaxy via Badtaste)! So here’s a first look at Predators:

Plot:

The movie Predators is starring Adrien Brody, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Louiz Ozawa, and Topher Grace. The film will hit theaters on July 7, 2010.

Well I wish Robert Rodriguez to be right on that one! At least the cast shows some enthusiasm on those pictures, and that’s a good start. Predators could be a winner, let’s pray for it!

Nimrod Antal Predators

Director Nimrod Antal who’s in charge of the upcoming movie Predators has been talking about this new Predator sequel:
“So far, it’s been great, and I think that the fans who may have been underwhelmed by the last two AVP films, I think they’re in for a very pleasant surprise.
[...]
I think we both recognize that the original film was as good as it was because of the practical, because it was a guy in a suit, because it was the jungle, so we stay true to that. We were in Hawaii for a month in the jungle, so there’s going to be some pretty impressive locations.
[...]
Again, it was a challenge in finding a balance. I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going, ‘What?’ but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic. He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they’re not ‘yolked-out’ Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They’re all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it’s going to play well.”

Good that Nimrod Antal is addressing the casting issue! Can’t say indeed that Adrien Brody looks as manly as Arnold Schwarzenegger… The way Director Nimrod Antal is explaining this choice, it feels like he wants to inject more realism in the franchise: I suppose he wants to focus on action and close combat and less on science-fiction and geeky tech weapons.
The movie Predators is filmed to be R-rated, so we may expect a bloody mess in the jungle!

The cast of Predators, the new Predator movie directed by Nimrod Antal and produced by Robert Rodriguez, has been announced:
- Royce (Adrien Brody): main character, a Steve McQueen-type
- Cuchillo (Danny Trejo): a Mexican enforcer from a drug cartel who has twin uzi strapped to his back
- Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov): a frightening, Russian bear-of-a-man, armed with a four barrel, gas powered, rotary machine gun
- Isabelle (Alice Braga): a tough-as-nails woman armed with a sniper rifle and speaks French
- Stans (Walton Goggins): A prisoner with a shaved head, a scorpion tattoo on his neck and armed with a prison-made knife
- Mombassa (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali): An African member of the Sierra Leon death squad who’s not afraid to die
- Hanso (Louiz Ozawa): a bad-ass Japanese Yakuza enforcer
- Edwin (Topher Grace): a small unassuming man who is formerly one of FBI’s most wanted
Adrien Brody (The Pianist) is a surprising choice as the lead character of Predators. I suppose that this new Predator movie won’t be as manly as the first film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. But this ensemble cast is still quite appealing and they could deliver a great Predators movie. Let’s knock on wood for that!

Director Nimrod Antal will be directing Predators the new Predator movie announced by Robert Rodriguez back in April.

The movie would be a direct sequel to the original, possibly ignoring Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, and Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. so we may consider it a reboot. The following Predator movie were maybe not as good as the first one with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the over-confident Rodriguez shouldn’t mock them, it’s not sure that his new Predator movie would fare any better:

Some are talking of an old script written by Rodriguez back in the 1990s that never got made in which Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenneger) is abducted by the PREDATOR and brought to their homeworld for some inter-species gladiatorial games. The script was also titled PREDATORS. So the plot of the new movie Predators probably comes from this first script.
