The Birth of a Nation Movie Poster

I’ve just spotted this teaser poster of The Birth of a Nation, the upcoming period drama movie written and directed by Nate Parker about the real-life story of Nat Turner, an African-American slave who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831:

THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Plot synopsis:
“Nat Turner (portrayed by Nate Parker), as a slave boy, is taught to read so he can study the Bible and be a preacher to fellow slaves. When Turner’s master takes him across the country on a preaching tour to profit from his preaching, Turner begins to see the scope of slavery and decides to become a different leader.”

Whoever replaced the horizontal strips with those chains had a great idea! And yep, there were only 24 stars on the American flag in 1831.

The release date of The Birth of a Nation is set to October 7, 2016.

The Birth of a Nation Movie

We’ve got our hands on the first official pictures of The Birth of a Nation, the upcoming drama movie written and directed by Nate Parker and starring Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, and Gabrielle Union:

(Click on a picture to enlarge.)

Plot synopsis:
“Set in the 19th-century Southern United States before the Civil War, this story follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. After witnessing countless atrocities against fellow slaves, Nat devises a plan to lead his people to freedom.”

Feeling like you heard that movie title before? Well, this new movie shares the same title as some racist movie released in 1915, it fell into public domain and is available on youtube:

The Birth of a Nation (1915 film by D.W Griffith)

Don’t worry Nat Parker’s movie isn’t a remake of that old racist film. Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation is on the good side of the force and will redeem the title it shares with Griffith’s movie!

The film has yet to get an official release date.

Update – listen to Director Nate Parker in those videos:
