In order to recreate the antique streets of Alexandria Director Amenabar isn’t stingy: huge sets have been built on the island of Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea:

Damn – I had an idea of a screenplay based on the story of Hypatia a year ago. These guys obviously got there first. A great tale of science versus religion – Greek philosophy against the rising tide of the Abrahamic faiths. I hope the movie doesn’t sell out on those messages and just become a love story – though I agree that’s important. I thought the love interest was between Hypatia and the prefect of Egypt in real life. And Christians never advocated freeing slaves.
