I’ve read the novel (the author is my girlfriend’s cousin). It’s a really good story, told in the first person, successively, by the diffrerent characters chapter by chapter. It gives a vivid picture of life in the Mississippi Delta in the mid-1940’s, and the rather complex nature of Southern racism. The characters are based on the author’s family ancestors (though most of the events in the story are fictional). Some current family members won’t read it because of the depiction of the story’s villain, “pappy” McAllen, who some elders have fond memories of. The book was a real “page turner”, and the story should make a pretty good movie, if they don’t mess it up and leave too much out, or change too much of it.
