According to wired we wouldn’t have to wait that long to see robots like in Jonathan Mostow’s Surrogates walking in the street:

Well, such robots would need a fail-safe control! I’m not much afraid of the machine itself, but I fear that people remote controlling such things could lose control of themselves… Imagine being smashed by one of those…
