DriverX – Is there a way to tip you on the app?Plot synopsis:
“Leonard, a middle-aged man living in the suburbs, has lost his mojo. It’s been two years since the demise of his record store–a beloved Van Nuys institution devoted to rare imports and cult offerings from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s—and now he’s a stay-at-home dad taking care of two young daughters while his wife Dawn works during the day. With both the kids now in elementary school, he’s been interviewing for jobs, but record companies aren’t looking for a 50 year old music lover with a knowledge of classic rock and pre-80’s hip hop. The gears begin to grind when Dawn reveals that with their savings now gone, the family is going to have a hard time paying their bi-annual property taxes and mortgage. Dawn needs Leonard to step it up and with available options at just about empty, Leonard decides to become part of the Gig Economy. In a process that takes less than 5 minutes, Leonard signs up to drive for DriverX, a popular rideshare company known for their lighted colored X’s in drivers’ windshields and sexy ads. In an instant, Leonard is now employed and driving at night, while still cleaning the house, fixing meals and babysitting during the day.
It’s a bit of a rough ride for Leonard in the beginning. All this new tech takes some getting used to and there are rules of the rideshare road that Leonard must learn. And right off the bat Leonard must cope with a brand new breed of beast—Millennials—with their strange, new language and unfamiliar customs. And more urgently, as his marriage starts to fray at home due to the financial strain, he negotiates some twisty turns in the car, as attractive, inebriated young women test his fidelity.
With a keen ear for how young adults speak and act and a deep understanding of the challenges facing many middle-aged men today, who still have to hustle in an economy disrupted by new technologies, DriverX follows Leonard on a literal and figurative journey of self-discovery and transformation. A voyage through LA’s late night, Tinder-fueled party scene, where you never know who is going to get into your car next, DriverX covers a number of topical issues facing our society today–the 1099 economy, the differences between Generation X and Millennials, becoming obsolete in a world now run by the generation behind you, and changing gender roles. But ultimately, DriverX is about acceptance and learning to be happy with your lot in life, even if the trip doesn’t turn out the way you planned.”
