A few words from Director Noam Murro about Themistocles, the lead character of the film:

Will the film be a bloody as its title treatment?
The film is directed by Noam Murro (who helmed Smart People). The release date of 300 Rise of an Empire is set for August 2, 2013. :)
“[The movie Xerxes] takes on the exact same three days as Thermopylae. There was a sea battle, called the Battle of Artemisium. And in that battle the Persian fleet met a small fleet of Greek ships and over three days they battled. In the same exact three days. Even though the Greek fleet was destroyed, the Persians were turned back from that advance. It’s a similar story. It centers around a character called Themistocles, who really was a democratic and free cat from Athens who was into true democracy, not Spartan democracy. So, it’s his story. He survives that battle, unlike Leonidas, and is able to regroup his forces at Salamis. And Salamis is at the end of the movie where Salamis is the final defeat of the Persian fleet. It kind of starts a bit before ‘300’ and goes a little passed that.”
Director Zack Snyder
Director Zack Snyder also added that the movie Xerxes will keep the visual style of 300. :)
“This movie follows Themistocles and the Battle of Artemisium, which coincidentally happens on the exact same three days as the Battle of Thermopylae. This one starts off with a quick retelling of the why of the Persian wars. It starts off at the Battle of Marathon and then it goes back to Themistocles finding out that Persians are invading again. and off we go over to learn a little bit about why Xerxes is the way he is.”
Frank Miller is working on a prequel to his graphic novel 300. The prequel to 300, titled Xerxes, will most likely be adapted into a movie Zack Snyder has expressed his interest.
Here’s what Frank Miller said about Xerxes:
“It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens. I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”
Frank Miller
But there is something I don’t really understand. The battle of Marathon was fought between the citizens of Athens and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. It was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. But despite the numerical advantage of the Persians, the hoplites proved devastatingly effective against the more lightly armed Persian infantry, routing the wings before turning in on the centre of the Persian line. Darius was Xerxes’ father.
So Xerxes, who is Darius’ son, wasn’t much involved in the battle of Marathon… Or did I miss something?
Anyway hope to get more information more about the movie Xerxes soon! :)
